Amish Youth Group Picks Up Litter in Southeastern Wayne County

An Amish youth group recently volunteered their time to pick up litter in the southeastern corner of Wayne County.  According to the county engineer’s office, the group covered 50 miles of roadways, filling up hundreds of trash bags and two large dumpsters.

Adams County Ravaged by Tuesday Storms

Emergency personnel, electric companies and residents of Adams County have been on the job all night, cleaning up from a Tuesday night storm that left a path of damage throughout the county. Most of the damage was in and around the West Union area, where radar-confirmed tornadoes touched down and the Cincinnati news stations set up in the county for the second time in less than a week.

Engineer Paul Gruner said once major damage is caused to a bridge’s pier, there’s no stopping what happens next. He said no matter how many protections were put in place at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, there was no way it could have withstood the impact of a ship that size.

YOUNGTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – In the early morning darkness, a container ship leaving Baltimore harbor smashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse.

Rescuers said they pulled out two people, but six others were still missing The ship’s crew issued a mayday call shortly before the collision, which allowed authorities to limit the flow of traffic onto the bridge but some vehicles still went into the water

Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti learned about the bridge collapse early Tuesday much like everyone else. He said it looked to be the “perfect storm.”

The Logan County Engineer’s Office received assistance late last week to clean up of storm damage debris at Indian Lake from Engineer’s Office Associations in Hardin, Shelby and Auglaize Counties, along with the Ohio National Guard. Covered Bridge Work Moving Towards Finish Line

HARPERSFIELD — Construction on the renovated Harpersfield Covered Bridge is nearing completion, and will likely be open for emergency vehicles by late April, said Ashtabula County Engineer’s Office Chief Deputy Tom Partridge.

Partridge said the Ohio Department of Transportation is planning to start construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Route 307 and Route 534. “They are pushing us. They want us to be done by April 29. ... We are on-schedule to make that happen for at least emergency vehicles,” he said.

Stark County's population stayed steady last year.

The county's population was 372,716 last year, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates. That's a slight dip from 2022, down by just 69 people. The county's population has dropped steadily since the pandemic.

VAN WERT—Parts of Lincoln Highway will be getting some improvements this summer.

“We applied for federal aid, a program through the County Engineer’s Association of Ohio, about five or six years ago for West Lincoln Highway, which is basically the county section pretty much from John Brown Road at the corporation of Van Wert, out to Convoy Road. Belmont County Commissioners Approve $3.3 Million in Paving Projects

The Belmont County Board of Commissioners approved several paving projects to be done this summer.

Belmont County Engineer Terry Lively said Wednesday that one major project was made possible by a $2 million grant through the Federal Highway Administration. Bridge load limits discussed by Paulding County commissioners

PAULDING COUNTY, Ohio-  The load limits of two bridges in Paulding County were discussed during a recent county commissioners meeting.

Engineer Travis McGarvey presented a load reduction for two bridges in Latty Township.

McGarvey recommended the bridge over Middle Creek on County Road 12 east of Ohio 637 be reduced to 28 tons for two-axle emergency vehicles and 42 tons for three-axle emergency vehicles. On Latty Township Road, east of U.S. 127, he requested the bridge over Prairie Creek on Township Road 48 have various new load limits.

Wright Recognized in Columbus for Work in County

Washington County Engineer Roger Wright might have thought he reached the peak of his career when his photo appeared on a county commissioner’s office coffee mug. But things just got even better.

Wright has been named Engineer of the Year by a vote of his peers in the County Engineers Association of Ohio. He received the award Thursday in Columbus at the three-day joint Winter Conference of the 88-county engineers’ group and the County Commissioners Association of Ohio. Wright, who earned his Professional Engineer and Professional Surveyor degrees at Ohio University, has worked in the Washington County Engineer’s office since 1999 and has served as County Engineer for 11 years.

Hancock County, Ohio - Hancock County Engineer Douglas Cade has been named the 2023 winner of Ohio’s David F. Brand Safety Award by the County Engineers Association of Ohio. Cade also has been nominated for the national David F. Brand Safety Award. Supply issues holding up completion of local road project

Bridge replacement on Road O

PUTNAM COUNTY — The Putnam County Engineer is providing notice to the public regarding the following project: Replacement of the bridge over Cranberry Run on County Road O, between Township Road 7-L and County Road 6 in Riley Township. The Putnam County Engineer, in partnership with ODOT, plans to replace this bridge to resolve the current weight restriction. DANVILLE — Road repairs for Danville Amity Road are at a standstill as bids for the needed project weren’t returned. 

The road has been known for its potholes, with residents pondering when the road connecting Howard and Danville would be repaired.

Open houses set to update progress on Spence bridge project

COVINGTON, Ky. (KT) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will jointly conduct two open house events later this month to update the public of progress being made on the $3.6 billion Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project.

Ground Broken for New Route 8 High Level Bridge

Bridge projects to be big focus in Jefferson County this year

The Jefferson County Engineering Department presented its annual report for 2022 to county commissioners on Thursday. Among some of their biggest projects, 7.5 miles of county road were paved, 17 slips sites have been fixed, two bridge structures have been replaced and many repaired, and more than seven miles of shouldering work was done. Commissioners recognized the engineering department for its work and good use of county monies. County Engineer Jim Branagan said he’s happy to have shifted attention on slip projects, but the office is looking to improve even more in 2023.

County expecting minimal salt buy after mild winter

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Belmont County board of commissioners addressed infrastructure and plans for next winter at its most recent meeting.

Belmont County will once again participate in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s road salt contract for salt purchases in 2023. This winter season was relatively tame, and Belmont County Engineer Terry Lively said his office would purchase enough salt to recoup losses.

ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Allen County's engineer hosted the final 2023 County and Township Road Program meeting on Wednesday.

A meeting that included all township trustees and the county's commissioners was held to discuss and finalize the 2023 Road Programs for township, village, and county road work throughout Allen County. At the meeting, county engineer Brion Rhodes reviewed the total cost for all of the road work which came out to be $2.99 million. This included the cost of 13.5 miles of paving and 78.6 miles of chip seal.

Richland County commissioners OK $800K in ARPA for road resurfacing projects

MANSFIELD -- Richland County commissioners on Tuesday approved $800,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds for various road paving projects in 2023.

The unanimous decision came during a meeting with county Engineer Adam Gove, who said his department, like all county engineers in the state, lost gas tax revenues in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ohio’s transportation bill benefits Butler County roads

The new $13.5 billion state transportation bill that’s been touted for addressing railway safety and a reconstruction of the Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River also includes important provisions for local jurisdictions to do more roadwork in-house which is cheaper.

Gov. Mike DeWine recently signed House Bill 23 into law and it takes effect July 1. County engineers and others have been fighting for years to get the legislature to increase the monetary limits on infrastructure projects they can perform in-house.

The Pike County Commissions along with Pike County Engineer Denny Salisbury were on hand Monday to open the bids for projects that are at least partially funded by monies from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA.)

The first project was the Carr’s Run repair project, which came with an apparent low bid around $15,000.

NEWTON FALLS — The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office is assisting the village in getting repairs and improvements made to the closed historic covered bridge.

Steve Papalas with the engineer’s office told officials Wednesday after discussions about fixing the bridge and placing the project out for bids, a bid of $762,000 was received, which would be covered by insurance.

Lake County Engineer’s Office, officials seek funding for road, bridge repairs

During a recent set of meetings, Lake County Commissioner John Hamercheck reported data detailing that the county has received a larger-than-anticipated amount of interest income, which is directly sent to the general fund.

“I know (Lake County) Engineer Jim Gills has expressed deep concerns over several roads and bridges that are closed or that are threatening to be closed due to respective states of disrepair, including inevitable failures,” Hamercheck told the board.

The Delaware County Engineer’s Office has issued its 2023 Paving and its 2023-24 Road Projects guides.

Fourteen major road projects will take place in 2023, and seven will start in 2024. Sixty-four township roads and 26 county roads will be improved by paving, as well.

Energy company donates $50,000 toward Monroe County road repairs

BEALLSVILLE –Gulfport Energy recently donated $50,000 to help repair Monroe County Road 38, Headley Ridge Road, in Beallsville.

The county has been working to repair the roadway since 2019 when a landslide damaged an approximately 200-foot section of the pavement. Monroe County Engineer Amy Zwick said the county was denied Federal Emergency Management Agency funding for the area, along with numerous other locations, meaning the county incurred thousands of dollars in expenses to repair the damage themselves.

Van Wert County Commissioners hear an update on $1.4 million Jennings Ditch cleanup

VAN WERT — Van Wert County Commissioners, on Tuesday, heard an update on the West Jennings Creek ditch cleanup project, an estimated $1.4 million project in Van Wert and parts of Allen and Putnam counties.

The first public meeting was held in late January and commissioners in the three counties voted to proceed to the next step in the project.

Scioto County Engineer Darren LeBrun has secured new grant funding to replace a total of nine bridges in the county.

How Ohio's limits on local construction have closed bridges, delayed road repairs

Allen County is not making all the bridge repairs it could, leading to weight limit restrictions and closures that impact not only commutes and development but emergency response times.

And they're not alone.

In Butler County, emergency response times jumped by 10 minutes while officials went through a three-month bidding process to fix a closed bridge. The county estimated its employees could have completed the work in three months.

ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Spring means the kickoff to construction season and the Township Road Program in Allen County.

The Allen County Engineer is meeting with township trustees this week to discuss proposed road work. Trustees are narrowing down which projects can move forward with the amount of available funding. With the price of asphalt raising another 10 dollars a ton, completing the number of projects is a challenge. Video footage help county engineers assess roadways

STEUBENVILLE — An independent crew will be capturing video footage of roadways throughout Jefferson County to help the county’s engineering department to identify areas of need.

Butler County road repair costs soar, but $30M in work planned

Nearly $30 million in planned Butler County road and infrastructure projects this year reflect how construction prices have soared and created a challenge for the county engineer’s office when it came to estimating costs.

Road repairs and resurfacing, bridge replacement top county's road projects

The Guernsey County Highway Department has finalized its game plan for 202, according to Guernsey County Engineer Paul Sherry, who pointed out that grant funding will play a key role in all of the projects being planned.

"All of our work depends on the availability of grant funding," Sherry explained. "Over the last 20 years, our revenue has not kept the pace with inflation. We were fortunate to have an increase in the gas tax in 2019, which has negated in the recent years of cost increases. Traffic safety study OK'd for Allen County

Mar. 16—LIMA — As the traffic increases, Allen County may see changes to local roadways. Allen County Commissioners approved the Allen County Engineer to enter into a contract with Mannik and Smith Group to conduct a safety study to analyze roadways countywide. Last year, the Allen County Engineer received grant monies of $71,500 from the County Engineer's Association of Ohio. According to the resolution approved at Thursday morning's meeting, the studies will be held on Breese Road between Beeler and McClain, Cole Street between Diller and Beery and Ft. Amanda between Buckeye and Adgate.

ODOT District 8 kicks off construction season, focuses on big U.S. 35 project

The Ohio Department of Transportation kicked off construction season on Monday. In total, ODOT is expecting to invest $2.5 billion into more than 1,000 projects, including 198 in Southwest Ohio.

One project for ODOT District 8 and the Greene County Engineer this year includes the interchange of U.S. 35 and Valley/Trebein Road.

County to replace 15 bridges this year

ZANESVILLE − The Muskingum County Engineer's Office is taking full advantage of federal bridge replacement funds to tackle several bridge projects this year. Since Muskingum County Engineer Mark Eicher took office five years ago, the county has replaced 50 bridges. The office plans to bid out six bridge projects this year, and tackle 10 to 12 on their own. Eicher's office is responsible for 402 of the approximately 640 bridges in the county.

"In all, we will replace about 15 bridges this year," Eicher said. "A very busy year."

Walker Mill Road Bridge in Boardman to be replaced next spring

The Mahoning County Engineer is proposing to replace the Walker Mill Road Bridge over Yellow Creek in Boardman. 

The project is currently scheduled to begin construction in the Spring of 2025. 

During construction, Walker Mill Road at the project site will be closed to traffic for a period not to exceed 180 consecutive calendar days. The official detour route for the closure will utilize South Avenue, Western Reserve Road, and North Lima Rd.

As roadwork costs skyrocket, Butler County plans for nearly 50 resurfacing projects

Butler County Engineer Greg Wilkens has 49 projects totaling $38.3 million identified for this year and 40.5% of the capital improvement plan is for resurfacing county and township roads.

Every year, Wilkens gives the county commissioners a preview of his plan to fix and improve county and township roads. This year, the largest cash outlay is the $16 million resurfacing program to tackle nearly 73 miles of rutted roads. In recent years, the paving budget has been in the neighborhood of $6 million, but it cost $9 million last year to pave 43 miles.

WOODSFIELD — A long-anticipated improvement project on Monroe County Road 12 will get underway later this spring.

Lollo, former Licking County engineer, remembered as calm voice of reason

NEWARK − Tim Lollo is being remembered for his calm demeanor and common sense approach to his job as Licking County engineer from 1991 to 2011.

Lollo, 64, of Newark, died Feb. 25 at the James Cancer Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. He was born March 28, 1958, in Springfield.

LANCASTER − The Fairfield County Engineer's office will repair one bridge and replace another with money from the $1.2 trillion federal infrastructure bill President Biden signed into law in 2021.

County engineer Jeremiah Upp said he's disappointed with only receiving enough federal money for two projects or about $493,000. He said he doesn't think anymore money from the infrastructure bill will be coming.

Jeffers Road bridge closed due to structural issues

Jeffers Road bridge, Lodi Township Road 83-1.40, recently was closed after Athens County Engineer Jeff Maiden made a field inspection and determined the bridge was unsafe.

The bridge is located 0.13 miles north from the intersection of Athens County Road 33A and Old U.S. 33.

Maiden conducted the field inspection on the bridge Monday.

Commissioners pave the way to a smoother future

GREENVILLE — The commissioners met Thursday to discuss sealed bids for the resurfacing and pavement markings for various county and township roads. Commissioners Matt Aultman, Marshall Combs, and Larry Holmes were present.

Jim Surber, county engineer, was present as bids were opened and read during the regular session meeting. In a matter of resurfacing, the engineer’s estimate was $2,093,867.50.

Funding remains biggest obstacle for road and bridge repairs

COSHOCTON − Coshocton County Engineer Fred Wachtel said the biggest obstacle for his department has always been having enough funding for needed work, and probably always will be.

Wachtel recently delivered his annual report for 2022 to Coshocton County commissioners. This included work done last year, projected projects for the coming year and other highlights from his office. Wachtel said work last year was pretty standard with road paving and bridge repairs being the bulk of projects. The same is expected for 2023.

Knox County engineer's office gears up for 2023 road projects

MOUNT VERNON — It won't be long before motorists on a portion of Danville Amity Road get to stop complaining about potholes. Instead, they'll face possible traffic delays due to a roadway safety project.

Knox County Engineer Cameron Keaton said Phase 1 of the $2.8 million road improvement project will go out to bid in the next couple of months. Phase 1 covers from Skyline Drive east to Richards Street in the village.

The Portage County Engineer’s Office, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Transportation, isproposing a bridge replacement project on Randolph Road over Potter Creek in Randolph. The bridge is located about one third of a mile west of the intersection with Trares Road.

Delaware County engineer receives award

During the Delaware County Board of Commissioners meeting on Feb. 13, Delaware County Engineer Chris Bauserman received the Clyde “Butch” Seidle Public Works Servant Leader Award from the Ohio chapter of the American Public Works Association (OAPWA).

“This prestigious award was presented by Del-Co Water CEO Glenn Marzluf and past chapter president Larry Lester from the City of Hilliard,” said a Facebook post by the county. “The award, named in honor of longtime public engineer Butch Seidle recognizes individuals who exhibit the highest standard of excellence, dedication and accomplishment over a sustained period and who are creative and highly skilled career servant leaders. And that perfectly describes Chris Bauserman.”

Engineer: Be aware of road workers

A new set of studies from The American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety on AAA’s website asking “tow workers, emergency responders, and road maintenance workers” about their experiences found multiple troubling statistics.

The study said that of the people asked, 60 percent of them had experienced a “near-miss” as roadside workers and 15 percent had survived being hit by a passing vehicle.

Genoa Township stop signs ruled illegal, to be removed

Lindsay Guard is concerned about the steady roll of cars, trucks, bikes and kids along Spring Run Drive, a popular north-south alternate to Sunbury Road in Genoa Township where three-way stop signs help to slow traffic.

Others living in this and other nearby middle-class neighborhoods — some for decades — also have been concerned enough about speeders to ask township officials to enforce the signs.

Ottawa County engineer says: 2023 to be big infrastructure season

Ottawa County engineer Ron Lajti said he expects 2023 to be one of the largest infrastructure construction seasons in the county’s history with budgeted projects totaling about $9.3 million scheduled for bidding.

A low bid of $790,734 from R&I Construction, Tiffin, was recently approved by the county commissioners for the replacement of Elliston Trowbridge Road over Toussaint Creek Bridge.

Highland County's Strait Creek Road Closes March 6 for Bridge Replacement

Work is set to begin on March 1 for a bridge replacement on Straight Creek Road (T.R. 239) in southeastern Highland County. The project is located approximately 0.5 miles west of S.R. 41, and will replace the existing structure over Baker Fork Creek. The roadway will be closed for the duration of the project starting March 6.

Gov. DeWine increases aid for local bridges

COLUMBUS - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced today that he is increasing Ohio’s yearly funding allocation for local bridge projects by $47.5 million for the next five years, bringing Ohio’s annual investment in county and municipal bridges to $112.5 million per year.

Ohio County Engineers Attend White House Event

WASHINGTON – On Thursday, July 16, 2020, over 200 state, local, and tribal officials from around the country joined President Donald J. Trump on the White House South Lawn as he reviewed the administration’s ongoing efforts to reduce burdensome federal regulations. The President highlighted the regulatory actions taken to expedite infrastructure projects at an event entitled Rollback of Regulations Helping All Americans. Engineers attending from Ohio included Champaign County Engineer Stephen McCall, Delaware County Engineer Chris Bauserman, and CEAO Executive Director Dean Ringle who were invited as part of a delegation with seven other local transportation officials from the National Association of County Engineers (NACE). Vice President Mike Pence, Idaho Governor Bradley Little, and Alaska Governor Michael Dunleavy also addressed the group.

Gas tax for Ohio begins

The last increase in the state gas tax was 2005. “I want to say it’s much appreciated because our costs have gone up since the last increase,” said county Engineer Bert Dawson. “It’s more of a catch up.”
